Best Coffee Shops in Chiang Mai for Coffee Lovers
Chiang Mai is one of my favourite places in the world for great coffee. Beyond its temples, night markets, and mountain trails, the city is buzzing with a first-class cafe culture. From modern architectural masterpieces to small family-run cafés. Whether you’re a slow traveling digital nomad, or just a serious coffee snob looking to score, Chiang Mai city has something for you.
Coffee here isn’t just about getting a caffeine hit. It’s about the atmosphere, connection, and culture. Many cafés source beans directly from local hill tribes in Northern Thailand, meaning every cup supports sustainable farming and keeps traditions alive. Time seems to slow down when you sit down for a cup here.
I identify as a bit of a coffee snob and after spending a few winters here in Chiang Mai working remotely, living just outside the old city. I’ve tried my fair share of coffee shops all around town. Here’s my curated list of the best coffee shops in Chiang Mai – these are places I’ve visited, loved, and recommend to my friends who come to visit. Scroll to the end for my full Google Maps list.
1. Riion (Old City, just by the moat)
Tucked inside the moat in the Old City, Riion is more than a café, it’s also a boutique small hotel with only a handful of rooms (I think it’s only 2 actually!). Designed by architects, the space blends clean lines with cozy warmth. My friend stayed there for a few nights and loved it too. If you need a calm oasis with good air conditioning and a sense of peace while you explore Chiang Mai Old City, this is your spot.
- Must-try: Iced Spanish Latte (more like Vietnamese condensed milk coffee but I guess that doesn’t sound as chic. It’s creamy, rich, and delicious).
- Vibe: Quiet, modern, architecturally interesting.
- Pro tip: The hotel books up fast and isn’t on booking.com so you’ll need to reserve directly.
- Location: Riion 205, Sriphum, 1 Moon Muang Rd Soi 9, Tambon Si Phum, Mueang, Chiang Mai 50200
And if you step outside, you’re just a short stroll from some of Chiang Mai’s oldest temples.

2. Magic Brew (Santitham)
This one has a real neighborhood feel. Magic Brew started as a simple market stall and has blossomed into a favorite local café. What I love here is their commitment to Thai coffee. Chiang Mai has some of the best coffee-growing regions in the country, and Magic Brew showcases them beautifully. It’s also worth noting that it’s a small family run cafe which has a really homey feel.
- Must-try: Americano made with locally sourced beans. Their dark roast is epic.
- Vibe: Open-air, breezy, super welcoming. Expect people to say hello and strike up a conversation.
- Pro tip: Best visited in the morning when it’s lively with locals. Nana Bakery is just a few doors down so grab a delicious pastry to have with your coffee (chocolate croissant or spinach and bacon quiche get my vote).
- Location: ช้างเผือก 1/4 ซ.โสตศึกษา ต.ช้างเผือก อ.เมือง Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50300

3. Areemitr Coffee (Santitham)

Run by a father-and-son duo, Areemitr is a real hidden gem that’s tucked away on a backstreet in Santhitham. Coffee is delicious, served in a large mug and it really feels like it was made with love.
- Must-try: Oat milk latte (smooth and nutty, perfect milk to coffee ratio).
- Vibe: Relaxed, in a local part of town, authentic and personal. The cafe is located at the back of their house.
- Pro tip: Come early so you have time to linger. It’s the kind of place that gets busy and I hate to take up a table for too long.
- Location: 17 Sodsuksa road, Chang Phueak, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 5030

4. Aka Ama Phrasingh (Old City & Beyond)
If Chiang Mai had a coffee superstar, it would be Aka Ama. Their mission is as impressive as their brews: sourcing beans from hill tribes in Northern Thailand and leading the charge for fair trade and sustainability. This is a busy spot, especially the HQ Old City location, but it’s worth it. The modern design of their flagship cafe is stunning and they just opened another smaller branch in the old city (that’s the new OG one).
- Must-try: Espresso with their delicious Lemon Pound Cake.
- Vibe: Trendy, bustling, with a loyal following of locals and tourists alike.
- Pro tip: Arrive early if you want a seat. They have multiple locations if you want to wonder from one to the other.
- Location: 175 2 Rachadamnoen Rd, Tambon Si Phum, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50200
5. Bob Coffee (Santhitam, Cowork-Friendly )

Digital nomads, this one’s for you. Bob’s has all the essentials for a productive work session: strong Wi-Fi, aircon, comfortable seating, and even a standing-style desk. And unlike many “nomad cafés,” it’s affordable and welcomes remote working – just don’t take the piss and ruin it for the rest of us. Make sure you’re buying something every 3-4 hours and not staying for 8 hours with only one drink.
- Must-try: Latte.
- Vibe: Work-friendly, chilled, practical.
- Pro tip: Head to the back area if you need extra focus.
- Location: 20 ถนนมรกต ซ. 4 Tambon Chang Phueak, เมือง Chiang Mai 50200
6. The Baristro x Ping River
This place is a design-lover’s dream. Minimalist interiors and stunning river views make The Baristro at Ping River one of the most stylish cafés in town. It’s also a social hub for locals and visitors alike.
- Must-try: Iced lattes and their seasonal specialty blends. They also do great food options so take your pick.
- Vibe: Instagram-worthy, elegant, airy.
- Pro tip: Best for late mornings when the light floods in through the large windows.
- Location: 62 Patan Road T.Patan Muang Chiang Mai 50300
7. Still.Coffee&Life
Still takes the phrase ‘hiddden gem’ to a whole new level. It’s hidden on the 4th of a department store and is worth it for the adventure of finding it alone. You can take the elevator up to the 4th floor but I recommend hunting for it through the stairs of the department store. You’ll end up at a beautiful loft space with large windows. Still Cafe also makes a great cup of coffee. It feels more like a gallery than a café, with minimalist design and soft light.
- Must-try: Orange-infused americano
- Vibe: Quiet, stylish, peaceful…. HIDDEN!
- Pro tip: A great spot to journal, read, work or simply be Still…
- Location: 20, 1 Wichayanon Rd, Tambon Chang Moi, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50300

8. Fernpresso at Lake
Sometimes you need a hit of nature with your coffee. Fernpresso at Lake delivers exactly that… a green coffee-filled escape just outside the city of Chiang Mai. They have also just opened a branch in Suan Dok.
- Must-try: Cappuccino.
- Vibe: Relaxing, leafy, great for slow mornings… if you want to get outta town!
- Pro tip: Visit Fernpresso when you have more time to soak up the scenery and spend a few hours.
- Location: QW6M+JX8, Unnamed road, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50200

9. Ozark by Food4Thought
Continuing the theme of a side of nature with our coffee, in the hills of Chiang Mai, Ozark gives you bold coffee with bolder views. Run by the folks at Food4Thought, this café serves strong brews made with Bay’s Coffee beans. They make really great speciality coffee and it has a real hit to it.
- Must-try: Latte (their coffee is famously strong).
- Vibe: In nature, green, leafy.
- Pro tip: Make a day trip out of it, the journey is part of the experience. They also do excellent food.
- Location: 118/3 Ratcha Phruek Road, Mae Hia, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50100
10. Mixx Cafe
One of Chiang Mai’s quirkiest coffee experiences, Mixx Cafe is literally just a window, hole in the wall cafe run by a Japanese barista. He specializes in pour-overs, and every cup feels like a mini coffee ceremony. Expect great coffee made with passion.
- Must-try: Pour-over coffee.
- Vibe: Niche, unique, a true hidden gem.
- Pro tip: Perfect for impressing friends with a “secret” spot.
11. First Officer Coffee Roasters (Suan Dok)
I used to live around the corner from First Officer, a small local micro-roaster with award-winning baristas. They source their coffee from a wide variety of high-quality coffee beans from leading growing regions around the world. Their Chiang Rai beans are delicious. Super cool interiors, and staff that make you feel really welcome. It’s very small so don’t sit and work for hours but come and enjoy a fantastic cup of coffee. It’s around the corner from In-Clay if you feel like getting arty and going to a clay workshop.
- Must-try: Latte
- Vibe: Super local, friendly and attention to detail
- Pro tip: Perfect for impressing friends with a “ local” spot.
- Location: 15 Sirorot Rd, Tambon Su Thep, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50200
